What's Included

An insert sits inside the existing fireplace and runs a liner up the chimney to a cap at the top. A plate seals the gap between the liner and the old flue, so rain no longer runs down into the masonry and the damp soot smell goes with it. We inspect the chimney first and fix any crown or flashing leak in the same quote. Inserts run $2,650 to $5,300 installed.

Firebox checked to see if an insert will fit
Gas, wood or electric units, wood models EPA certified
Stainless liner run to a cap at the top
Top plate seals the old flue against rain
Gas line hooked up for gas units
Warranty registered with the maker

What an Insert Does for a Leaky Fireplace

A masonry fireplace that is used a few times a year spends most of its life as an open hole in the roof. Rain comes down the flue, cold air drops in on winter nights and warm air escapes up it the rest of the time. A gas insert changes that. It is a sealed firebox that sits inside the existing fireplace opening, with a liner running from the insert all the way up the chimney to a cap at the top. The liner carries exhaust out and, on most direct-vent inserts, combustion air in. At the top, a plate seals the gap between the liner and the old flue so rain cannot run down the outside of the liner into the masonry.

Before an insert goes in, the chimney needs to be in good enough shape to carry it. A cracked crown or failed flashing will keep letting water into the masonry even with a liner inside, and that water can still stain the chimney breast. So we inspect first and fix the water entry points as part of the quote. A camera inspection is often the right step when the fireplace is changing from wood to gas, as NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 when the appliance changes. See chimney level 2 inspection for what that covers.

Choosing an Insert and What the Price Covers

Gas inserts installed with us run $2,650 to $5,300. That range covers the insert, the liner, the top plate and cap, the gas connection and the installation. Where a job falls depends on the size of the firebox, the unit you choose, the height of the chimney and the finish you want around the insert. You get the exact figure in writing before we order anything. We measure the firebox opening and depth carefully, since inserts are sized to fit, and we check the gas line to make sure it can supply the unit at full output.

Most homeowners choose by heat output, flame look and controls. A unit sized to the room keeps it comfortable without overheating it. Remote and thermostat controls make the insert behave more like a heater than a fireplace. Glass fronts keep the room side sealed from the chimney, which also means no more damp soot smell on humid days. Once installed, an insert needs a yearly check like any gas appliance, covered on our gas fireplace cleaning page. If you want a fireplace where there is none, see fireplace remodel for direct-vent options.

Fireplace Inserts in Thousand Oaks

Tile roofs are everywhere in Thousand Oaks, and they make chimney leaks harder to spot because the tiles hide the flashing underneath. Many calls here start with a ceiling stain beside a stucco chase, and the cause is often a flat, rusted chase cover holding water at the top. Brick chimneys on the hillside streets more often leak at the counter flashing.

Fireplace Inserts in Camarillo

Camarillo sits far enough from the ocean for warm afternoons but close enough for morning fog, so chimney metal here sees both moisture and heat. Galvanized caps and chase covers tend to show rust streaks sooner than owners expect. On the single-story ranch homes, the chimney often rises through a low roof slope where leaves and water collect behind it.

Fireplace Inserts in Oxnard

Salt air is the main thing working on chimneys in Oxnard, especially in the neighborhoods closest to the harbor and the beaches. It corrodes galvanized caps, rusts flashing fasteners and eats through steel chase covers much faster than it does inland. When we find water in a firebox here, a corroded cap or a rusted-out chase cover is usually part of the story.

Fireplace Inserts in Santa Paula

Santa Paula chimneys deal with irrigation as much as rain. Sprinklers and orchard water hitting the base of a chimney can keep brick wet right through the dry months, and we often trace white stains on the lower courses to a misaimed sprinkler head rather than a roof leak. Brick stacks near downtown more often leak at the top, through worn crowns and open joints.

Fireplace Inserts in Ventura

Ventura gives us both kinds of chimney water problem in one city. Near the beach, salt air corrodes caps and flashing. On the hillsides above downtown, wind-driven rain hits exposed chimneys hard, and many brick stacks there were finished with a thin mortar wash instead of a true crown, which cracks and lets water into the core.
