Fireplace Gas Logs in Thousand Oaks

A gas log set in an open masonry fireplace sits right under the flue, and an uncapped flue drops rain straight onto the burner. We size and install the set, and close off the water before it starts.

What's Included

Vented gas logs run with the damper clamped open, which leaves the flue open to the sky. Without a cap, rain rusts the burner pan, clogs ports and cracks ceramic logs. We check the firebox and flue condition, size the set to the firebox and gas supply, fit the damper clamp and recommend a cap where the flue is open. Log sets are quoted in writing once the set is chosen.

Vented or ventless sets sized by BTU to room and firebox
Damper clamp fitted on vented sets
Gas line run with a shut-off valve
Ceramic fiber or refractory logs
Cap advised where the flue is open to rain
Remote or wall switch if you want one

Gas Logs and the Open Flue Above Them

Vented gas logs are a simple way to get a fire without wood: a burner, a set of ceramic or fiber logs, a gas line and a valve, all sitting in the existing firebox. Because they vent through the existing chimney, the damper has to stay open whenever the logs might be lit, and a damper clamp is fitted to hold it open. That means the flue above the logs is open to the weather. If the chimney has no cap, every storm drops water onto the burner pan and logs. Burner pans rust, ports clog with rust flakes, ceramic logs absorb water and can crack when heated, and ember material clumps. The fix is straightforward: a cap on the flue before or with the log set. Caps installed with us run $155 to $635.

Before we install a log set we check the firebox and flue for condition, since the logs rely on the chimney to carry exhaust out. A flue with cracked tiles or open joints is not a good place for exhaust, and a smoke chamber full of loose debris can block the draft. We also check the size of the firebox, as each log set has minimum dimensions, and the gas line, which must be able to supply the burner. Vent-free log sets exist too, but they release combustion products into the room and have room-size and other limits, so we talk through those before recommending one. For a look at the firebox first, see fireplace inspection.

Choosing a Set and Keeping It Working

Log sets vary by size, log style, burner design and controls. Larger sets look fuller but need a firebox and gas supply to match. Some burners spread the flame across a wide bed of embers, others concentrate it behind the logs. Controls range from a simple key valve to a remote with a variable flame. Gas log sets are quoted when you book, once we know the firebox size, the set you want and the state of the gas line. You get the figure in writing before we order.

Once installed, a gas log set needs a yearly check: burner ports cleared, logs placed correctly so the flame does not touch them in the wrong spots and produce soot, the pilot and thermocouple tested, and the damper clamp in place. If you start to see soot on the logs or the firebox walls, or the flame turns yellow and lazy, something has shifted. Rust on the burner pan means water is getting in from above. Our gas fireplace cleaning page covers that yearly visit, and gas fireplace repair covers faults.

Gas Logs in Thousand Oaks

Tile roofs are everywhere in Thousand Oaks, and they make chimney leaks harder to spot because the tiles hide the flashing underneath. Many calls here start with a ceiling stain beside a stucco chase, and the cause is often a flat, rusted chase cover holding water at the top. Brick chimneys on the hillside streets more often leak at the counter flashing.

Gas Logs in Camarillo

Camarillo sits far enough from the ocean for warm afternoons but close enough for morning fog, so chimney metal here sees both moisture and heat. Galvanized caps and chase covers tend to show rust streaks sooner than owners expect. On the single-story ranch homes, the chimney often rises through a low roof slope where leaves and water collect behind it.

Gas Logs in Oxnard

Salt air is the main thing working on chimneys in Oxnard, especially in the neighborhoods closest to the harbor and the beaches. It corrodes galvanized caps, rusts flashing fasteners and eats through steel chase covers much faster than it does inland. When we find water in a firebox here, a corroded cap or a rusted-out chase cover is usually part of the story.

Gas Logs in Santa Paula

Santa Paula chimneys deal with irrigation as much as rain. Sprinklers and orchard water hitting the base of a chimney can keep brick wet right through the dry months, and we often trace white stains on the lower courses to a misaimed sprinkler head rather than a roof leak. Brick stacks near downtown more often leak at the top, through worn crowns and open joints.

Gas Logs in Ventura

Ventura gives us both kinds of chimney water problem in one city. Near the beach, salt air corrodes caps and flashing. On the hillsides above downtown, wind-driven rain hits exposed chimneys hard, and many brick stacks there were finished with a thin mortar wash instead of a true crown, which cracks and lets water into the core.
